MATH 2E: COURSE INFORMATION
Book: James Stewart: Calculus (Early Transcendentals)
7th Edition
Course Content: Chapter 15 on multiple integrals (15.8
and up) and Chapter 16 on vector calculus.
Exams: There will be two midterms and a final exam.
Dates:
Midterm 1:
Monday, January 27 (i.e. Week 4)
Midterm 2:
Wednesday, February 19 (i.e. Week 7)
Final:
Monday, March 17, 8:00 - 10:00 (See WebSoc)
Exceptions: It is everyone's responsibility to show up
for exams. Failure to show up at the exam will result in 0 points.
The only exception is a verifiable emergency (see below). If you
know in advance you will have time conflict with the scheduled exams
for justified reasons, please contact the instructor as soon as
possible to discuss how to accommodate you.
Exam rules: The exams are "closed book": no books,
notes or electronic devices (see below). A picture ID is required
and must be presented on request.
Emergencies: In case of emergency the instructor
should be notified as soon as possible.
Quizzes: There will be 6 to 8 quizzes, depending on
the progress of the course. The topic and the date will be always
announced in advance. There will also be an announcement on the
webpage. There will be no make-ups for missed quizzes, except
verifiable emergencies.
The problems for exams and quizzes will be standard,
not tricky and of the same nature as the suggested
homework problems. They will be selected so that they will be
doable. However, the problems will be sufficiently distant from
those solved in discussions so that they will provide a test of
understanding of the material and of independent work.
Electronic devices during exams: All electronic
devices must be turned off and placed in closed bags. No
calculators of any kind may be used on quizzes or exams.
Course grade: The grade will be based on the final
exam, midterms and quizzes. These will count as follows:
Final: 40%
Midterm 1: 25%
Midterm 2: 25%
Quizzes: 10%
The grade will be determined by a curve as follows:
Cutoff point for A: Mean + Standard Deviation
Cutoff point fo D: Mean - Standard Deviation
The interval in between will be divided into equal parts to provide
the additional grades.
Minimum passing total score is 40%, that is, the total score below
40% corresponds to F.
No extra credit will be given; everyone will be
evaluated based on equal criteria.
Homeworks: Homeworks will not be collected. It is
strongly recommended to work on the assigned homework
problems as they will demonstrate a typical use of the methods we
will discuss and also will be the basis of exams. Most importantly,
working through the problems is the essential part of the learning
process that will enable you to develop the necessary skills and
understanding. The only way to learn things is by doing them.
Attendance: Attendance of both lectures and
discussions is not required, but strongly encouraged. It is the
student's responsibility to keep informed of any announcements,
syllabus adjustments or policy changes made during scheduled
classes.
Academic integrity: Students are responsible for
informing themselves of UCI's policies regarding academic
dishonesty. Students found in violation of the code are subject to
penalties ranging from loss of credit for work involved to F-grade
in the course, and possible risk of suspension or probation. The
academic dishonesty policy will be enforced in all areas of the
course, including quizzes and exams. For details see: Catalogue-Appendix
