The Chair, in consultation with the Graduate Vice Chair and the Graduate Studies Committee, will determine offerings at the 200 level and above and assign faculty to teach them. This is normally done in the winter quarter of the preceding year. Faculty active in the Ph.D. program will be assigned to teach the key first-year graduate courses in order for new students to get an early introduction to potential thesis advisors.
Courses below the 200 level will be assigned by the Vice Chair for Undergraduate Studies. Requests regarding subject, time of day, or load distribution should be given to the Vice Chair.
Courses with small enrollments will be reviewed by the Chair and Vice Chair to determine whether they are an appropriate use of departmental resources. The University has historically so examined classes enrolling fewer than 12 (lower division), 8 (upper division) or 4 (graduate).
