MATHEMATICS COMPUTER USERS

An account has been created for you on our main math server. The math server is a Sun 280R running Solaris 8.0. You also have connectivity with the department's Linux Lab that consists of 10 linux machines running matlab and maple.

Questions or problems with you computer or user account should be directed to: support@math.uci.edu or extension X46377.

Department of Mathematics Home Page: http://www.math.uci.edu

If you want to check your email only and have access to a browser, type: https://math.uci.edu/webmail and enter your math account user name and password.

Using Your Math Account:

Due to security concerns you may only use SSH to login to the math server. F-Secure SSH is installed on all the Macintosh systems. To start F-Secure SSH, double-click the F-Secure SSH icon in the F-Secure SSH program group.

Note: SSH is the only way to access the Linux Lab machines remotely.

If this is the first time you're connecting to the host, SSH may ask you to accept the host's previously unknown host key.

Once you are logged onto your account you can type the command "ssh hostname" to reach other remote hosts running SSH protocols; such as the Linux lab machines: cam1 - cam10.

To change your Password type this command: yppasswd

Email:

If you have been assigned a math email account, please follow these guidelines to set up your account.

The first thing you need to do is change your password. You will need to use an ssh client to connect to the math server. Here are some instructions for various platforms:

If you are using Windows:

1) Use PuTTY (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/) or the ssh client of your choosing

2) Enter math.uci.edu for the hostname to connect to, and click 'Open'. (If it asks you to accept the host key click 'Yes')

3) Log in with the aforementioned username and password.

If you are using Mac OS X:

1) Open a terminal window by launching the Terminal application (Applications/Utilities/Terminal)

2) type 'ssh username@math.uci.edu' at the prompt (without the quotes and your math account name instead of username)

3) Log in with the aforementioned username and password.

If you are using Linux:

1) Open a terminal window

2) type 'ssh username@math.uci.edu' at the prompt (without the quotes and your math account name instead of username)

3) Log in with the aforementioned username and password.

Once you are logged in, change your password by typing 'passwd' (without the quotes) at the command prompt.

The password checking program will require a password that is not easily cracked so try to think of one before you login to start. The campus has some suggestions on creating a good password which can be found here http://www.nacs.uci.edu/email/good_password.html

With regards to e-mail you can use pine remotely on the math server or whichever local e-mail client you prefer (thunderbird, etc). The mail server supports IMAP and POP. Here is a link with information on how to configure various clients (If you use these instructions, be sure to replace the incoming and outgoing servers with math.uci.edu): http://www.nacs.uci.edu/email/settings.html

If you have any trouble, please email support@math.uci.edu from another email account or call (949) 824-6377.

The supported email application on your Unix account is Pine. Type "pine" at the prompt and a menu on how to proceed appears. You may also use other e-mail clients on your machine. If you have questions with the configuration please contact support@math.

Printing:

There are public printers on the second floor of the MST Building. They are located in the Faculty Library MSTB 252 and are named "Lounge4300" and "Lounge4000" and "grad" is located in MSTB 246, the TA Offices common area.

There is also a color printer named "Rainbow" located in the Mailroom MSTB 105.

Print to any of the networked printers in the Math Department by using the command:

"lpr -Pprintername filename"

You can check the print queue with the following command:

"lpq -Pprintername"

Spam Filtering:

Depending on your mail reader, you can set up a filter using instructions found here: http://www.nacs.uci.edu/email/spam/filter.html

For each filter you create using:

X-UCIRVINE-Spamscore

you'll want to create another one with the string for the math scanner:

X-DCS-MailScanner-SpamScore

Also, we've found that some messages will be flagged {Spam?} but not have a high spam score. They're usually spam so you might want to consider dumping those as well.

We recommend that you use a spam folder rather than deleting the messages, at least at first, so legitimate e-mails that are inadvertently flagged as spam don't get lost.

Lab Access:

You also can have direct access to a Computer Lab. The Linux Lab is located in MSTB 232 and consists of 10 Linux machines and 1 printer named "Lab4000". Door access codes can be obtained from Darla Becker or the Math Front Desk. You can access the computers in this room with your math Unix account username and password.

The Linux Lab can be used for instruction or research.

Vacation Message:

If you would like to turn on a vacation message for your math.uci email account please email support@math.uci.edu at least 24 hours before the vacation message is needed with 1) the desired vacation message and 2) the desired start date of the message. Please also email support@math when you have returned so the message can be turned off. Support does not turn it off automatically.
