M.D. Fried #202 is from Paul Halmos' book <i>I Have  a Photographic Memory</i> Copyright 1978 by the American Mathematical Society, who granted me permission to use it. It faces opposite the page of Grothendieck. In it I am 25, at a blackboard at UM having returned from my first of two years at IAS, standing in front of proof conclusion of Schur's 1921 Conjecture describing <i>exceptional</i> polynomials over number fields. Halmos' caption says he suspected I was becoming more an algebraic geometer, than remaining a number theorist.
