M.D. Fried #202 is from Paul Halmos' book I Have a Photographic Memory Copyright 1978 by the American Mathematical Society, who granted me permission to use it. It faces opposite the page of Grothendieck. In it I am 25, at a blackboard at UM having returned from my first of two years at IAS, standing in front of proof conclusion of Schur's 1921 Conjecture describing exceptional polynomials over number fields. Halmos' caption says he suspected I was becoming more an algebraic geometer, than remaining a number theorist.
