In response to questions of Stefan Wewers, we describe the space of Frey-Kani covers, as a variant on the space of dihedral covers. The reduced Hurwitz space of the latter is a modular curve. <p> 

In this approach the Frey-Kani covers also show up their modular curve nature, with a
different slant than in the original description by Frey and Kani.
