Amidst a stellar collection of novels by many renown authors – those who have signed up for Open Road's promotions have gotten this – is one of TC's early books:
The Earth Is the Lord's 01/01/20 US All Retailers $2.99 Early Bird Books
*|FNAME|*, The promotions are at the link above, though we expected to find Taylor Caldwell promotions here. This time, however, there was nothing, except the statement you would find TC promotions there.
As a [prelude to/test of] bigger things, I am putting a link to a chapter from our mother's (Peggy's) autobiography below. It is as much a thinly disguised biography of Taylor Caldwell. This is on a typewriter that Peggy got long before there were any word processors. Therefore it is scanned. It needs retyping and many corrections to it, which I intend to do. Yet, even as it stands it gives some precious you-are-there detail – available nowhere else – on how TC moved toward her first publication, Dynasty of Death in 1938.
Chapter 2: Annie Caldwell (1880–1953). This is Peggy's view of TC's hardscrabble life: A Scotch family always in battle. Peggy was born in 1920, many years after TC's description in Growing up Tough. Chapter 1, which I haven't shown you is of Peggy, distraught because of the time she was left on her own in a convent. She had hoped that her father, Will Combs – the grandfather of us siblings – would take her with him after he and TC had separated, though not for many years officially divorced. At the end of this chapter, Peggy returns to the Reback house with her half-sister Judy in her hands, while Marcus Reback learned what he had gotten himself in for. Then, through Junior High and High School, though often not in attendance, while Mr. and Mrs. Reback became a reluctant team working on TC's novels. Will Combs visits again, Mr. Reback has a transfer to NYC, from which he commutes. To there TC would visit and take her novels to publishers. Then they all moved to NYC in '36 and '37, just before acceptance of Dynasty of Death for publication. Pages 25–60.
