Taylor Caldwell, at her desk, at the time of the publication of "The Sound of Thunder" (1957). Behind her are photographs of her second husband, Marcus Reback, and her daughter Judy. This was a period that started her greatest fame. Starting when she switched publishers, in about 1953 to the period of her famous involvement with the John Birch Society. As the JBS made clear, they epitomized her as a symbol of conservatism based on the publication of her own version of an autobiography, On Growing Up Tough (1971). Her most spectacular success was with Dear and Glorious Physician, a novel that came at almost the midpoint of her actual publishing career, a period for which she made some choices that set her path for the rest of the time (until 1980) she could still write. |
