The Department of Mathematics anticipates openings for Academic Coordinators for the Math CEO program.

UC Irvine Math CEO (Community Educational Outreach) is an inclusive program designed to spread the joy of mathematics among K-12 students who may not typically be exposed to academic enrichment opportunities. Founded in 2014 by two faculty members in the Department of Mathematics at UC Irvine, Dr. Alessandra Pantano and Dr. Li-Sheng Tseng, Math CEO in the 2018-2019 academic year served approximately 180 students from three middle schools from Santa Ana, California (Lathrop Intermediate, Villa Fundamental and Carr Intermediate), and a fourth middle school (Marco Forster), located in San Juan Capistrano. The majority of participants are Hispanic/Latino. Through Math CEO, the students get access to enriching math curriculum that is not part of their daily school work. The curriculum contains activities that reveal the excitement of mathematics and its applications. By working with college mentors in a university setting, the middle school students also gain a multidimensional perspective of university life. In the 2019-2010 academic year, the Math CEO program will expand to include a high school component.

Math CEO inspires and supports interest in mathematics, with the overarching goal of imparting the mathematical foundations and critical thinking skills required to successfully pursue a college education and career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) areas. The program also seeks to instill the desire for a college education by sharing college access information and financial aid opportunities with participating students and their families.

The Math CEO Coordinator helps with planning, executing and evaluating outreach events on and off campus (e.g., weekly math enrichment session, annual fieldtrips to UCI, college and annual college-orientation workshops for parents).

The primary responsibility of the Math CEO Coordinator consists in ensuring that the weekly math enrichment meetings with the K-12 students run smoothly in logistics. With the help of a team of undergraduate outreach assistants, the Math CEO Coordinator is responsible for various logistic aspects of the program including, but not limited to, table assignments for students and mentors, ordering snacks, copying booklets and other educational materials, preparing manipulatives for the lessons, and room setup.

In collaboration with the Math CEO directors, the Coordinator works with and supervises several people including Outreach Assistants (undergraduate work study students) and mentors/volunteers (mostly undergraduate students who work directly with middle school participants). The Math CEO Coordinator is also the liaison between the UCI Math CEO team (students, faculty and staff) and the public (including teachers and school administrators), and ensures communication between all parties involved. The Coordinator may also assist the leadership team in recruiting and training volunteers, overseeing finances, collecting/analyzing student feedback and writing grant proposals.

Last but not least, the Math CEO Coordinator works with the leadership team on designing weekly mathematics curriculum for participating K-12 students, as well as training materials for the undergraduate mentors.

Essential Duties
Under the direction of Program Director, recruit and organize undergraduate and graduate students to assist with mentoring support
• Coordinate the logistics for weekly math enrichment sessions, student field trips and college orientation workshops for parents
• Monitor and support undergraduate work studies employees
• Provide consistent, ongoing communication with Math CEO leadership team
• Maintain relationships with school teachers in order to facilitate program
• Develop and maintain a culture of collaboration
• Coordinate activities of program with inter-related activities of other programs, departments or staff to ensure optimum efficiency and compliance with appropriate policies, procedures and specifications
• Prepare periodic reports on program activities, progress, status or other special reports for management or outside agencies
• Develop, comply and write communications and promotional literature for distribution such as newsletters, brochures or flyers; coordinate the overall process from development through and printing and distribution
• Develop and facilitate workshops, meetings or conferences; coordinate logistics, scheduling and participant communications
• Interact and maintain liaison with students, faculty, staff and outside/community agencies in facilitating program objectives
• Assist the leadership team with designing weekly K-12 math curriculum, as well as the training materials for the mentors
• Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in mathematics, education or other appropriate field AND two years of progressively responsible administrative/coordinator program experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Master or PhD degree preferred.
