Duo Lin

Duo Lin is currently a freshman in math major at UCI. She is from Xi'an, China. She attended an exchange student program when I was a junior in high school. She studied in a public high school in northern California and lived with a local family for a year. She decided to come to the US for college after this experience. She had been working as the math teacher's assistant for her class in middle school and high school. She plans to start research next year and pursue a PhD in math after graduating from UCI.

Huiwen Wu

Huiwen Wu is the 3rd year P.h.d student in math department of UC Irvine. She grew up in Huangshan, China and got her bachelor’s degree in Sichuan University.

Doo Ree Kim

Doo Ree Kim earned her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from University of California, Irvine. She is the first in her family to earn a college degree. She was a Chancellor's Excellence Scholar and also a member of the Anteater Mathematics Club. Ever since she was a little kid, she has been taught to participate in community service through church, school, and various organizations that provide education for diverse groups of people. Doo Ree loves to learn mathematics, help others, and do research.

Lani Matsumura

Lani Matsumura is a first-year Education Sciences major, specializing in Children's Learning and Development, and Digital Media and Learning. She has an interest in STEM education and is entering her third quarter as a Research Assistant in the Digital Learning Lab at the School of Education. She is involved in School on Wheels at UCI, an organization dedicated to serving the homeless community and tutoring children who are homeless, and next quarter she will also be involved in Math CEO.

Jennifer Bryson

Jennifer Bryson is a third year PhD student at UC Irvine in applied math. She is interested in randomized algorithms and big data topics. She graduated with her Bachelors degree from Texas A&M in 2013. In her spare time, Jennifer loves being outside rock climbing, backpacking, or just enjoying the beach.

David Nguyen

David Nguyen was born in Vietnam and later became a naturalized United States citizen. He is a first generation college student and currently a first year graduate student in Mathematics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He received his Bachelor's in 2014 and Master's in 2016, both in mathematics, from Cal Poly Pomona, after switching his major from Mechanical Engineering. He is fascinated with the relationship between mathematics and physics, and, in particular, between Number Theory and Theoretical Physics. This surprising relationship is mind boggling and he wants to learn more about it.

My advice to undergraduates: don't be intimidated by complicated mathematics. When you learn it for the first time, try not to worry too much about all the technical details; instead, try to get a big picture and feel for what the subject is about and what people are trying to do.

Michiel Kosters

Michiel Kosters is a visiting assistant professor at the Mathematics Department, UCI. He received his PhD in Mathematics from Universiteit Leiden, The Netherlands, under the supervision of Hendrik Lenstra. He likes to do research in algebraic number theory.

Jonathan Nakai

Jonathan Nakai received his bachelors in Chemistry at UCI. His hobbies are running, gardening, and bird watching. He loves sitting outside in my backyard watching and listening the birds at his feeders.

Qianxun Xu

Qianxun Xu (DIMF lead photographer) is double majoring in Mathematics and Film and Media Studies. Qianxun likes studying mathematics, especially pure math subjects such as abstract algebra and linear algebra. Qianxun enjoys watching films. She writes movie reviews and recommendations for a digital magazine that she created by herself. She is interested in the production side of the filmmaking. Qianxun wants to pursue a career in film investment and work toward her goal to become a film producer.

Timmy Ma

Timmy Ma is a 5th year graduate student at UC Irvine in applied math. He received his B.A in Mathematics with an emphasis in Teaching at UC Berkeley. His research interests include mathematical modeling of complex social phenomena such as linguistics. He is a Pedagogical Fellow for UCI’s math department where he trains and mentors incoming math graduate students in pedagogy. He is captain of an intramural sports team, the Mathletes, which comprises of graduate students, faculty, and staff of the math department to promote sportsmanship and team work.

Phuong Tran

Phuong Tran is a junior student at UCI. She majors in Chemistry. She is also a transfer student from Riverside College. She was born in Vietnam and has been living in the U.S. for almost five years. Her hobbies are volunteer, traveling, and tasting new dishes.
