Math 232ABC--Algebraic Number Theory, Fall 2015-Spring 2016 ********************************************************** Instructor: Professor Daqing Wan, Office RH 410C. Meeting Times: MWF 12:00-12:50pm Textbook: Number Fields by Daniel Marcus Location: RH Room 440R Office Hours: 11:00-11:50pm on MW. Office Phone: (949)-824-7013 Email: dwan@math.uci.edu ************************************************************* This graduate course provides an introduction to algebraic number theory, that is, the study of finite extensions of the rational numbers and their rings of integers. In particular, we will further develop the theory of fields and rings of integers, including topics from ideal theory, units in algebraic number fields, ramification, valuation theory, local-to-global principles, function fields, and local class field theory. Applications will include explaining quadratic reciprocity and understanding quadratic forms over Q. The final grade of this course will be based on one final exam (50%), one midterm (30%) as well as homework (20%). The problems on the final exam will come from the suggested homework problems as well as examples in the lectures. ************************************************************* Homework Problems ************************************************************** Fall 2015 Chapter 2: 2, 13, 14, 15, 16, 29, 34, 45.
