Math 140A Information Sheet From the Catalog: 140A-B Elementary Analysis (4-4). Lecture, three hours; discussion, two hours. Introduction to real analysis including: the real number system, convergence of sequences, infinite series, differentiation and integration, and sequences of functions. Students are expected to do proofs. Prerequisites: Mathematics 2D, 2J; Mathematics 13 is strongly recommended. COURSE INFORMATION: Lecture meets MWF 10-10:50. Discussion section meets TTh 3-3:50. See SOC for details. The text for the course is "Elementary Analysis: The Theory of Calculus", by Kenneth Ross. The information regarding the text and purchasing it can be found at http://isbn.nu/038790459X The Fall Quarter will cover Chapters 1, 2, and 3. There will be two midterms, in approximately the 4th and 7th weeks. If we get a grader, then homework will be graded, and count 10% of the grade. If not, homework will not be graded, but turned in and recorded as submitted or not, and will count about 5% of the grade. The two midterms will count approximately 50% of the grade, the final counting the balance, either 40% or 45% depending upon whether homework is graded or not. Homework will be assigned in Lecture, and turned in at the Discussion section. Generally you will have a week to complete the homework assignments, unless I find that people are not thinking about the homework until the last moment, in which case I will shorten the time for you to complete the homework. Homework turned in on Tuesday will be returned to you on Thursday, and homework turned in on Thursday will be returned to you the following Tuesday. Homework will be posted on my website, at www.math.uci.edu/~mfinkels/140A My office is MSTB, Room 245. I will hold office hours MWF 9-10, and by appt. My telephone is 949-824-5538.
