[Janet Miriam Holland Taylor Caldwell (September 7, 1900-August 30,
1985) was an Anglo-American novelist and prolific author of popular
fiction, also known by the pen names Marcus Holland and Max Reiner, and
by her married name of J. Miriam Reback.
Taylor Caldwell was born in Manchester, England, into a family of
Scottish background. Her family descended from the Scottish clan of
MacGregor of which the Taylors are a subsidiary clan. In 1907 she
emigrated to the United States with her parents and younger brother. In
1931 she graduated from the University at Buffalo. In collaboration
with her second husband, Marcus Reback, she wrote several bestsellers,
the first of which was Dynasty of Death.]
This controversial credit to Marcus Reback for melding and researching
TC's characters and history, contrary to
what Peggy says, agrees with my documentation in Chapter 9 – supported
by a letter from TC, herself. With 45 publications, 42 of which are
still in print, Taylor Caldwell clearly had a productive career. The
quality of the Taylor Caldwell's achievement is much less assessed.
She was the darling of ideologists, rarely of literary critics. I once
wrote to Bennett Cerf asking why the LA Times had not reviewed one of
her last novels, despite its being on the Best Seller lists over a
year. He responded: "Taylor Caldwell needs no reviewing."
He might have meant, she was the same in all her novels, though he did
not elaborate.
Still, asking what did the writing of an exceedingly popular author
epitomize, can be a valuable review of a time's
preoccupations. Peggy's autobiography (witness Chapter 10), also
suggests we have here an immense disconnect between the "wise" author
and the bizarre striver's neediness for attention.
