GRADING OF HOMEWORK AND
EXAM QUESTIONS
ASPECTS OF GRADING: The goal of the course is to
develop the ability to both understand and write proofs, to
and come up with simple proofs. For this reason, the emphasize in
grading will be not only on correctness of the argument, but also on
the appropriate writing and style in presenting proofs.
(A)
If
the question consists of a problem to be solved, the
maximum number of points will be 5, and there are the
following options.
(A1) The problem has no subproblems, but on its own it is
worth 5 points. In this case the points will be assigned according
to the following rule:
5 - problem completely solved and the writing and style is
appropriate.
4 - there are minor inaccuracies
3 - problem half-solved and/or significant inaccuracies in writing
and style.
2 - "good start" but there are major inaccuracies both in
correctness of the argument (i.e. the solution is not actually
there) and writing/style.
1 - there are some comments to the point, but there is no actual
structure that would lead to an argument and/or writing and style
are poor.
0 - nothing in the attempted solution is to the point and/or the
text is illegible.
(A2)
There are subproblems worth 3 or 2 points or 1 point. In this
case each subproblem will be graded separately as follows:
3 point
problem:
3 - completely solved and appropriate writing and style.
2 - half or more than half solved and/or minor deficiencies in
writing and style.
1- less than half solved, but there are some portions to the point.
Major deficiencies in writing and style.
0- nothing in the attempted solution is to the point and/or poor
writing and style.
2 point
problem:
2 - completely or mostly solved and almost appropriate writing and
style.
1 - around one half solution and/or major deficiencies in writing
and style.
0 - nothing or close to nothing in the attempted solution is to the
point and/or poor writing and style.
1 point
problem:
1 - more than half solved and reasonable writing and style
0 - half or less than half solved and major deficiencies in writing
and style
With
each problem it will be specified how many points it is worth or
how many points each subproblem is worth.
(B)
If the questions consists of yes/no subquestions then each subquestion
is given
1 point if the answer is correct,
-0.5 points if the answer is incorrect, that is, you will lose
0.5 points for an incorrect answer, and
0 points if there is no answer.
This should discourage people to make random choice.
