What is new in the Fall Quarter?

  • According to the University of California
    1. VACCINATION is required of all UC students, faculty and staff, unless a special exception was obtained from the campus.
    2. As of 8/18/21, UCI requires masks for all indoor activities, including instruction.
    3. All instruction in the 20-21 academic year will be IN PERSON, unless already scheduled on-line or remote in the Schedule of Classes.   The instructor and the students are expected to be present for scheduled classroom activities, even if lectures are available asynchronously.
    4. Students are expected to be present for scheduled in-person assessments (like exams). The School policy is posted at: https://ps.uci.edu/stuaff/exams
  • The UCI Division of Undergraduate Education has granted official EXCEPTIONS to a very small number (ca 50) of UCI students who can’t attend in person. Neither the School nor the Departments have been given a list of those students. Instructors who have been contacted by DUE about one of these students should work with their Department in order to formulate a plan for the student who can’t be present. Other situations, such as medical emergencies and disability accommodations, should be handled in the same way as they were under pre-pandemic conditions, often via DSC.

  • If the pandemic situation changes on short notice, instructors need to be ready to deliver remote versions of their lectures. ALL General Assignment UCI Classrooms should be equipped as SMART Classrooms with document cameras (https://www.oit.uci.edu/labs/smartclassrooms/). Document cameras can be used in place of whiteboards for recorded lectures. A Task Force headed by Zhiqin Lu is working to develop instructions for automatic recording of lectures in Smart Classrooms.
