Campus and School Policies Q&A

  1. Examity is not supported in the fall 2020 quarter (7/31/2020).

  2. Is C- a passing grade?

Refer to http://catalogue.uci.edu/informationforadmittedstudents/academicregulationsandprocedures/#Pass/NotPass for details. C- and below will record as NP.

  3. If I get a C- in Math 2A, can I take Math 2B?

The catalogue is the best place to refer to. If a course is listed as a prerequisite but with no min grade mentioned, then it means D- or better is required. Example, the 2B prereq is 2A. No min grade mentioned. So, students need a D- or better in 2A to move to 2B. Most lower div Math requires D- or better to move on. Most of the upper div Math classes require C or better in Math 13. Within a sequence some UD's require a C- or C to move on, from course A to B or course B to C. We can only enforce what is stated in the Catalogue.

  4. I received a D in my Math 2D course. I am unable to enroll in Math 2D again as WebReg denies me access when I try to add the course. What should I do?

You cannot sign up for Math 2D until your grades are posted onto your transcript. At that time, if your transcript shows a grade of C- or below you will be able to enroll into Math 2D fo in the following quarters a repeat.

  5. Be cautious to give incompleteness grade

Incompletes should only be given out with an agreement between the student and Instructor on exactly how and when the coursework will be made up. This agreement should be binding. The Instructor should feel obligated to compute the grade after the student makes up the missing work, and the student is likewise obligated to take missing exams, etc. by the deadlines decided by the Instructor…. which is all worked out at the time the Incomplete is given.

It is far too dangerous for faculty to give out Incompletes with ZERO agreement on the details of making up the work.

In addition, the school guidelines are clear that Incompletes should only be given to students who have completed at least half of the coursework. https://ps.uci.edu/stuaff/content/undergraduate-instruction#grade

  6. Academic Senate Fall 2020 P/NP Policy

The temporary Pass/Not Pass regulations extended for Fall Quarter 2020 are as follows:

    • All undergraduate courses will have a P/NP grading option. However, faculty may not require students to enroll in a course P/NP if the course currently has a letter-grade option. The choice is up to the student.

    • The Academic Senate grants deans and units the authority to temporarily count P/NP courses toward the fulfillment of specific School and major requirements (where fulfillment of a requirement currently can only be done with a letter grade).

    • P/NP courses taken during Fall Quarter 2020 will not count toward the 12-unit overall cap on these courses.

    • Students on academic probation may enroll in a course as P/NP during Fall Quarter 2020.
