University Studies 4-Fall 2012-Suggested Projects from First meeting

  • The following four research papers from the middle of the 20th century contain the proofs of the theorems which were stated in the first meeting of the seminar.
  • You are not expected to be able to understand these papers right now, but with my help you might be able to, during the course of the seminar.
  • In any case, do not be scared away by these papers, as I will be proposing other more accessible ones after each meeting.
  • These papers, as well as other resources, will serve as the basis for your project ("term paper") for the seminar.
  • The file called "Gradus ad Parnassum" below contains a list of 34 exercises, some of which will be pointed out individually after each meeting of the seminar.
  • The relevant exercises from the September 27 meeting are numbers 1 and 28 in that file.
  • Singer-Wermer 1955 (Theorem 1A) (pdffile)
  • Sakai 1960 (Theorem 1B) (pdffile)
  • Jacobson 1937 (Theorem 2=Exercise 28) (pdffile)
  • Hochschild 1942 (also Theorem 2) (pdffile)
  • Gradus ad Parnassum (Exercises 1,28) (pdffile)
