(1) A syllabus containing your name, office location, office hours, and email contact, the name of any TAs, their office location, office hours, and email contact, the name of the textbook, a course outline, a tentative list of sections to be covered, dates of examinations, and the grading policy should be made available to students on or by the first day of the class, either in hard copy or on-line on your course webpage. Include this link to the Mathematics Add/Drop and Waitlist Policy in your syllabus: http://www.math.uci.edu/undergrad-courses/course-registration-and-placement-information##3.

Homework assignments can be listed on the syllabus, but should be given at least one week before the deadlines.

It is recommended that you include a statement such as, “You are responsible for the content of all course emails sent to your UCI account. These course emails could contain urgent information regarding new facts for a lecture or change of dates in the schedule. Once sent these become part of our contract of expectations. All students are required to activate their UCI netIDs. You can go to the OIT website to activate your UCINetID: http://activate.uci.edu/.

A statement concerning cheating should be included in your syllabus. For example: "This professor strongly adheres to the University's Academic Honesty policy, and cheating will NOT be tolerated. A student caught cheating may receive an F for the course and/or suffer other serious disciplinary action. Information for students regarding the UCI Academic Honesty policy can be found at: <http://www.editor.uci.edu/catalogue/appx/appx.2.htm#gen0>.” A faculty resource page on Academic Honesty can be found at: http://honesty.uci.edu/.

Sample syllabi from former instructors will be made available on the Department website at: http://www.math.uci.edu/courses-instruction/course-syllabi. Textbooks are chosen by the undergraduate committee.

It is strongly recommended that you create and maintain a course webpage listed on the EEE (https://eee.uci.edu/) course website. These are easily produced using materials provided on EEE.

(2) Grading policy: The course grade is computed from quizzes, homework assignments, midterms, and final exam. Quizzes are normally given by the TA in the Discussion sessions. The final exam should cover all the material taught in the course (not just the material taught after the midterms), and it is recommended that the final exam count for at least 40 percent of the course grade. The instructor should work with the TA to ensure that an adequate number of quizzes are given. It is common to give 6 to 7 quizzes per quarter. As stated above, this information should be clearly stated on the syllabus.

(3) We recommend the median grade to be around B- or C and a grade distribution to be approximately: 20% A, 25% B, 30% C, 15% D, and 10% F. If there is a large deviation from this recommendation, please consult with the Undergraduate Vice Chair before submitting grades.

(4) It is not appropriate to give review problems or practice exams that are too similar to the final exams.

(5) We ask instructors to monitor the performance of all TAs and graders and to fill out the TA and grader evaluations forms sent out by the Graduate Affairs Officer, Donna McConnell.

(6) For each course taught, the instructor is required to keep a copy of the syllabus, the final exam, all final exam papers, and a hard copy of the EEE GradeBook for two years. All instructors are required to return these materials to the department upon leaving the university.

(7) When you encounter a suspected case of academic dishonesty, please review the policy and procedure on the UCI Faculty Resource page on Academic Honesty, http://honesty.uci.edu/, and immediately report the case to the Undergraduate Program Coordinator, Laurie Andress-Delaney.

(8) Please consult the Undergraduate Program Coordinator, Laurie Andress-Delaney, in cases where a student requests an "Incomplete" grade or a "Post-Quarter Drop."
