Mathematics embodies a beautiful simplicity, but at the same time provides a powerful tool we can use to describe the world around us. This duality is captured by the Nobel Laureate Steven Weinberg who said ”It is very strange that mathematicians are led by their sense of mathematical beauty to develop formal structures that physicists only later find useful, even where the mathematician had no such goal in mind.(….) Physicists generally find the ability of mathematicians to anticipate the mathematics needed in the theories of physics quite uncanny. It is as if Neil Armstrong in 1969 when he first stepped on the surface of the moon had found in the lunar dust the footsteps of Jules Verne.”  The research of our distinguished award winning mathematics faculty at UCI is continuing this discovery of the mathematics that will be used in the future and in many cases is of immediate use in a variety of sciences.

Our undergraduate and graduate programs provide high quality education and research experience that prepare our graduates for numerous career opportunities.

The success of our young and dynamic department is recognized by the latest National Research Council assessment of research-doctorate programs.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Department of Mathematics and to UCI. We strive to provide a healthy work environment where diversity and outreach are valued. We are in the heart of Orange County next to the Pacific Coast (just minutes from beautiful beaches) and enjoy wonderful weather all year round.
