Math 2AX, Calculus Preparation, is a new course (first offered in Spring 2026) that aims to provide additional support for Math 2A students, especially with regards to the Pre-Calculus topics that are most used in Math 2A.  Math 2AX is an optional, one-unit course, and is offered Pass / No Pass.  All Math 2AX students are required to be simultaneously enrolled in Math 2A (but not vice versa: one may enroll in Math 2A without enrolling in Math 2AX).  Please see the syllabus below for more details about the class.

Comparison with Math 1B: Math 1B (offered in Summer, Fall, and Winter) is a comprehensive Pre-Calculus course, designed to be taken before Math 2A (in contrast to Math 2AX, which must be taken at the same time as Math 2A).  Math 1B is 4 units, is offered for a letter grade, and has exams.  Math 2AX is 1 unit, offered Pass / No Pass, and has homework assignments but no exams (the intention is that students enrolled in Math 2AX devote their exam preparation time to Math 2A).  Students looking for a more comprehensive treatment of Pre-Calculus, and students wishing to take a complete course prior to enrolling in Math 2A, are encouraged to enroll in Math 1B.  Students looking to receive one hour per week of support (especially Pre-Calculus support) while taking Math 2A are encouraged to enroll in Math 2AX.
