Richard Hamilton
Davies Professor of Mathematics
Columbia University

Professor Richard Hamilton received his Ph.D. from Princeton University, and is currently the Davies Chair Professor at Columbia University. Hamilton was awarded the Veblen Prize in 1996 and just received the 2009 Steele Prize from the American Mathematical Society for his seminal work on Ricci flow. He was a plenary speaker at the 2006 ICM in Madrid. Professor Hamilton is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences as well as a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

Professor Hamilton is one the founders of modern geometric analysis. He is well known for his discovery and the development of the theory of Ricci flow. He proposed and laid out the program for using Ricci flow to solve the Poincaré conjecture, which was finally implemented by Perelman. Other than this important application in topology, the Ricci flow equation also has many other significant applications in Riemannian geometry and Kähler geometry.
