Recent advances in manufacturing allow fabrication of structures and materials with unprecedented topological complexity. Optimal design of these topologies could potentially result in unprecedented performance in a number of metrics. The powerful technique of topology optimization is an ideal tool for such optimal designs. In this presentation, we will discuss topology optimization of continuum or discrete structures for minimum weigh subject to stiffness constraints. We propose a methodology to incorporate the fabrication cost of such structures into the performance-based design problem.
