Students are responsible for verifying they meet all course prerequisites listed in the UCI Catalogue before enrolling in a course.
Prerequisites Taken Outside of UCI: Students can submit a request to clear math course prerequisite(s) that were satisfied outside of UCI, such as from an outside institution (community colleges, other 4 year universities, etc.) or through exam scores (SAT, ACT, or AP), via the Undergraduate Math Enrollment Request form (must be logged into your UCI Google account).
For enrollment in lower division calculus, please refer to the Academic Testing Center's page on calculus placement.
Incomplete/No Report Grades: Grades of incomplete (IN) or no report (NR) cannot be used to satisfy prerequisites.
Access to Full Courses & Waitlist
To ensure fairness to all students, enrollment is managed exclusively through WebReg. Instructors and department staff cannot add students to full or waitlisted courses. Furthermore, the department cannot re-enroll students in courses they have accidentally dropped or from which they were dropped by the Registrar for unpaid fees. Many math sections fill to capacity, so please plan your schedule carefully and have alternative options available.
Waitlist: The waitlist is a student’s best opportunity for gaining access to a full course. Enrollment from the waitlist is NOT guaranteed. You can find more information about waitlists on the Registrar’s website.
Attending Alternative Discussion: Students must attend the discussion section in which they are enrolled. Due to classroom capacity and fire safety regulations, attendance in a different section than the one assigned is not permitted.
Major Restrictions: Detailed information about which math courses are restricted to certain majors can be found on the Schedule of Classes. Requests to lift math major restrictions before the stated date on the Schedule of Classes will be denied.
Repeat Restrictions: Students wishing to repeat a Mathematics course must wait until the repeat restriction lifts. Specific restriction lift dates for each quarter can be found on the Schedule of Classes. Alternatively, students may retake courses during Summer Session when repeat restrictions do not apply.
Enrollment Exception (Course Add/Drop After Week 2)
The UCI Math Department follows the Registrar’s policy on course adds, drops, and changing units and grade options as well as Enrollment Exception procedures. Students are expected to follow the Registrar’s calendar.
Math Department Enrollment Exception Policies:
Late Add Requests
- Course adds after Week 2 are not permitted by the Math Department.
Late Drop Requests
- Weeks 3 through 9: Students may petition to drop a course via the Enrollment Exception process in Student Access ONLY for valid, documented emergencies. Emergencies include severe personal illness, immediate family death, or serious accidents. Documentation must be provided upon request. Approval is NOT guaranteed. Students must continue attending class and submitting assignments until requests are fully processed.
- Week 10: Requests for late drops during Week 10 will not be approved under any circumstances. We encourage the student to reach out to the instructor to discuss how to successfully complete the course.
Requests Will Be Denied For:
- Lack of awareness of deadlines, drop procedures, or failure to drop by the deadline
- Course not required for Major, School, or University requirements
- Change in major or academic plans
- Failure to meet course prerequisites
- Poor academic performance due to course difficulty
- Poor academic performance due to excessive course or work load
- Poor academic performance on midterm or other exams
- Poor attendance
- Difficulty understanding the instructor or teaching assistant
- Inability to attend remaining classes or final exam due to scheduling conflicts
- Severe illness affecting individuals other than the student, spouse, domestic partner, or child
Status notification: Students must monitor their Enrollment Exception status through Student Access. The Department of Mathematics does not provide direct email notifications regarding petition status.
Section changes: Requests to switch a lecture or discussion section during Weeks 3 through 10 for a particular course will not be approved. All section changes must be completed independently through WebReg during the first two weeks of the quarter.
Students wishing to enroll in overlapping courses must obtain written permission from BOTH instructors. You can submit a request to enroll via the Undergraduate Math Enrollment Request form (must be logged into your UCI Google account). Documentation of the instructors’ approvals will be required. Please note we cannot over-enroll full courses and can only authorize enrollment in math courses.
Undergraduate Enrollment in a Graduate-Level Course
Undergraduate students seeking to enroll in graduate-level Math courses numbered above 205 must first obtain permission from the course instructor. Then you can submit a request to enroll via the Undergraduate Math Enrollment Request form (must be logged into your UCI Google account). Documentation of the instructor’s approval will be required. Please note we cannot over-enroll full courses.
Graduate Enrollment in an Undergraduate-Level Course
Graduate students have last priority in enrollment into undergraduate math courses. To request enrollment, contact the Undergraduate Program Coordinator at mathundergrad@uci.edu. Please note we cannot over-enroll full courses.
Contact the faculty member directly to obtain authorization codes for Math 199ABC or 299ABC enrollment.
Concurrent Enrollment Policies
Students not formally admitted to the University may enroll in UCI courses through Concurrent Enrollment via the Division of Continuing Education (DCE). To register, visit the Division of Continuing Education website. For questions regarding concurrent enrollment, contact the DCE office directly.
Cancellation/Modification of Courses
The Department of Mathematics reserves the right to cancel courses or modify classrooms and meeting times as needed. While we make every effort to notify students of cancellations or changes, students bear ultimate responsibility for monitoring their Study List regularly to stay informed of any updates to their course schedules.
