The UCI Math Department stands against the violence that has destroyed the lives of George Floyd, Tony McDade, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and the countless other Black women and men killed by police violence and white supremacy in the US, and around the world. We support the many people demonstrating against institutionalized racism, and in our support, we acknowledge the problem of racism within our own field and the ways in which the mathematics community and STEM fields more broadly have upheld and perpetuated white supremacy. While protests play a role in bringing about change, in order to eliminate institutionalized racism, sustained action on the part of institutions like our University, School and Department will be necessary. The Department has created an anti-racism committee that will formulate a plan of action for dismantling anti-Blackness and racism in mathematics and will hold ourselves accountable to this work.  We strive to create an atmosphere of inclusive excellence in the Department that is welcoming to all peoples.
