Let us congratulate Richard Palais for being awarded the Mathematical Association of America's Lester R. Ford Award for his article "A Disorienting Look at Euler's Theorem on the Axis of a Rotation" jointly written with Robert Palais and Steve Rodi, published in the American Mathematical Monthly, 116 (2009), no. 10, 892-909. Professor Uhlmann named Senior Scholar for 2010-11 by Clay Mathematics Institute

The Clay Institute has named Professor Gunther Uhlmann as one of six Senior Scholars for 2010-2011. "The aim of the Senior Scholar Program is to foster mathematical research and the exchange of ideas by providing support for senior mathematicians who will play a leading role as "senior scientist" in a topical program at an institute or university." Professor Uhlmann is also the recipient of the MSRI / UC Berkeley Chancellor's Award.

UCI hosting the Fall 2010 SoCal-Nev Section Meeting on Saturday, October 16th

UCI will be hosting the Fall 2010 SoCal-Nev Section Meeting on Saturday, October 16, 2010. The registration deadline is Tuesday, October 12 at 5:00 pm. UCI Mathematics Ranked Top 10 in Research by the National Research Council

In the latest ranking by National Research Council (NRC) of The National Academies, the Mathematics Department at UCI was ranked among a pool of 127 mathematics programs in the country. The two overall ranking based on two different methods are:

Regression based, 20-52;

Survey based, 11-34.

The report also provided the rankings of the following categories:

Research, 4-16;

Student Outcomes, 105-120;

Diversity, 60-90.

Professor Christian Sadel has received the "Professor of the Month" honor for November 2009 from the Campus Village Housing.

Let us congratulate mathematics Professor Christian Sadel, who received "Professor of the Month" for November 2009 from the Campus Village Housing. This Housing has over 770 continuing and transfer undergraduate students. The residents of this Housing can nominate a professor who has inspired, motivated, or encourage them. The purpose of this program is to provide students a venue for recognizing professors who have had a positive impact on their academic pursuits. Professor Sadel received the most number of nominations in November and received the Professor of the Month honor.
